Blood Orange

Blood oranges are a visually stunning citrus variety distinguished by their deep crimson to burgundy interior flesh, which develops its dramatic colour due to the presence of anthocyanins — pigments that form when the fruit is exposed to cold temperatures during ripening. Most commonly of the Moro, Tarocco, or Sanguinello variety, blood oranges offer a complex flavour profile that combines classic orange sweetness with hints of raspberry, cherry, and pomegranate, making them a gourmet favourite in fine dining and home kitchens alike. Primarily imported from Italy and Spain or grown in limited quantities in Himachal Pradesh during winter, blood oranges are a seasonal delicacy. The juice is spectacularly deep red and makes extraordinary cocktails, sorbets, salad dressings, and marmalade. Blood oranges are among the highest of any orange in anthocyanin content, which is linked to anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and cardiovascular protective properties.
